Have you ever felt unmotivated with working out alone?

Or perhaps you feel lonely in your weight loss journey? You are the only one with this weird diet and exercise regimen, whereas ALL your other friends are living it up and partying away? But yet you know you have to stick with your own routine to achieve your weight loss goals. Well you are not alone, many people have felt this way in the past. In fact I have experienced it myself, but not to worry, there is hope!

For those of you who enjoy companionship and love to hang out with people, why not consider a fitness buddy or even buddies during your quest for weight loss and a sustainable healthy lifestyle! There are quite a few benefits to forming a partnership or a group when exercising and trying to lose weight.

Here are 5 good reasons why having a fitness buddy or a group of friends into fitness can help you multiply your weight loss effects or outcomes!

The 5 reasons to have a Fitness Buddy (or Buddies):

1. You can keep each other motivated (and in check)!

Let’s face it, there will be days that we feel unmotivated, or just feel like ‘taking a break’ from our exercise routing, or even our healthy diet habits. You feel that the whole world is working against you, you have been an outcast because of your recent journey on a healthy lifestyle. These things can happen easily and force you off your track of sustainable weight loss journey!

This could be vastly different if you had a health buddy who is committed to the same healthy goals that you have! Imagine when you are down and out, your fitness buddy texts you and asks you for a workout session. Or you scroll and find an Instagram post of your fitness buddy hard at work in the gym or munching down on some healthy meal!

This changes your whole perspective and could potentially get you back in the groove of things! Which leads me to my next point, you are the average of the 5 people you choose to surround yourself with.

 2. You are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with!

Imagine yourself getting a Whatsapp or LINE message from your friend asking you out to Steak N’ Shake or for an All-You-Can eat Korean BBQ buffet dinner! Tempted to go along? Heck Yeah! Otherwise, you will be the loner of the group, and who could resist All-You-Can-Eat Korean BBQ aye?

Now tweak that scenario and imagine that your colleagues at work are your fitness buddies, they will probably rub it in your face when you decide to snack on that chocolate bar. Or they will give you a hard time when you decide to skip gym-day just because you feel lazy! But if these guys or girls you surround yourself with are workout fanatics or pay really close attention to their diet routine, gradually, you will realize that your daily habits will start to reflect similar trends as your workout buddies have. You will find yourself eating healthier, you will be talking about the latest new move at the gym that they can’t wait to try out.

Things will ultimately change and get you closer to your weight loss goals when you surround yourself with like-minded people!

3. Healthy competition goes a long way!

You have heard this many times before, but it is absolutely an undeniable truth! I remembered my own encounter with a fitness buddy and specifically having some (healthy) competition involved when it came to our weight loss goals. This worked particularly well for me because I am one of those who would like to win in just about anything I compete in. One day, what I told my workout buddy “JJ” was that at the end of the week when we get our measurements (weight, body fat%, and visceral fat%), whoever has a larger drop in these in two out of the three categories will be declared the winner… And the loser? Will have to do 100 burpees!!! How is that for healthy competition.

It is fun, entertaining (when I watched JJ, my workout buddy, did burpees), and funny (when I was the one doing burpees)! You will be amazed with what kind of strict rules you are willing to set for yourselves just by having such kind of ‘Healthy competitive’ arrangements when it comes to weight loss goals!

Don’t delay any further, look for a fitness buddy. Nowadays, more and more people are getting more health conscious and want a healthier lifestyle. It should not be too hard to fine one. If you need more reasons to justify a workout buddy, read on!

4. Learn new things from each other!

The next great thing about having a fitness buddy or a group of fitness buddies? You guys or girls will spend hours and hours talking about nutrition, about resistance exercises, about workout routines, and different healthy fruit blend etc.

The fact is that you can learn many health tips from each other. Just recently, within my own health chat group, we had a quick discussion on what is the best exercise to have a ‘V’ shape body that all guys yearn for (and girls drool at). There were points about different gym equipments that we could use as well as doing variety of pull ups that could give us the desired results! Aside from this, there are always sharing about dietary habits and nutrition supplements as well.

Again, I have learnt a tremendous amount of knowledge about weight loss just by hanging out with these guys! On the other spectrum, because of my passion in the fitness arena, I have been doing a lot of reading on my own in which it enables me to share health tips with my friends as well!

The bottom-line is that the new things you can learn and pick up from each other is limitless. You can share on just about anything with regards to healthier lifestyle habits! So don’t delay any further, get out there and search for a fitness buddy! If someone asks you to be their fitness buddy, go for it! Nine times out of ten, you will end up benefiting from such person!

5. It is simply more fun, more laughter, and definitely more sweat!

And last but not least, it is simply more rewarding of a weight loss journey just to have a fitness buddy lose weight, laugh at and with you, sweating it out together and ultimately achieving your weight loss goals with you over time. It is a tremendously satisfying feeling to have someone committed to the journey along with you.

Life is not just about ourselves; sometimes, you may realize that by helping others to achieve their goals (weight loss in this case), you are actually helping yourself to achieve your own goals as well. So my next piece of advice is to put yourself out there and definitely consider getting a fitness buddy! Do it for all the reasons that I have listed over here, do it for the sake of a symbiotic relationship where both you and your fitness buddy/buddies can reap exponential results by teaming up!

That is all I have to share at the moment, do strongly consider a fitness buddy as I had given you multiple reasons to have one above. If you have any comments or queries, please feel free to leave them below. Alternatively, you may write to me at merrell@sustainableweightlosshabits.com

I don’t know why I never even considered having a work out buddy! What a great idea!

I mean, it’s true – when I reflect on my own “efforts” to exercise regularly… “Regularly” doesn’t seem to usually last for more than 1 or 2 weeks. Then it’s a few weeks again before I attempt to get back at it. It’s that motivation though.

I think it would be really fun to not only BE motivated by a friend, but also BE the motivator… because I think when someone else is there, whether they feel like working out or not, all it will take is their presence and I will be encouraged to keep going not just for my own, but for both our benefits!

    Great article! Cheers! 🙂

Fitness buddies is so important! They keep you accountable and you don’t have to worry about going alone to the gym and getting so easily bored! I really need a buddy for me since my pregnancy. This made me want to get one even more so I can do fitness competitions. What time to do this than while its getting warm outside. Great info!

Hi Liz, thanks for the comment and I couldn’t agree more! It is tough to get back in shape after a pregnancy, I hope you are able to find a workout buddy that is going through a similar phase as you are. With the fitness buddy or group, you could support each other and achieve your weight loss goals much quicker! All the best!

I love the idea of having a training buddy, but a lot of the time I feel for me, it would be to hard to arrange times to train together, work patterns might not allow it.
i train kids football team and i see the benefits in training in a group, it gives competitive edge to it.

Thanks for the comment and absolutely agree, with a training buddy, there are tons of benefits, though one of the pitfalls would be to find the time to work out together. It may take a little planning and coordination but the effort will be well worth it!
